Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a proposal that would eliminate coal power plants in New York by 2020.

Cuomo is proposing regulations that would require all state power plants to meet new emissions that would limit the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is contributing to climate change.

According to the governor, these regulations would make New York a coal-free state.

These regulations were recommended by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Three public hearings have been scheduled in July to provide opportunities for comment on these regulations.
