John King, the former NYS Education Commissioner, is taking over as head of the U.S. Department of Education.
King takes over for Arne Duncan, one of President Obama's longest serving cabinet members. Duncan says he is returning to Chicago to be with family after seven years in Washington.
King will take over the department officially in December; he is currently the deputy secretary.
The President will bypass the confirmation process in Congress, so King would serve in the top education position until the end of the President's second term.
