A retired Buffalo police officer was sentenced to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to disability fraud.

Former Lieutenant Patrick O'Mara claimed he was injured on the job back in 2005, and he collected a full salary and benefits until he retired in 2012.

Federal investigators found that O'Mara was actually working at another job and playing the organ at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Parkside during the time he claimed to be disabled from lifting two reams of paper.

In addition to jail time, O'Mara will have to pay the city more than $100,000 in retribution payments.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says since prosecuting cases of fraud like this, the number of Buffalo Police officer out on disability has gone from over 100 to less than 20.
