Following a recent wave of violence in the Queen City, community leaders and community members packed the auditorium at Frank E. Merriweather library to discuss solutions.
“We want to have a clear vision and we want to agree so that anybody that’s not for that vision know that you not in the right place,” moderator Sam Radford told listeners.
The tone was set early at Monday’s meeting. It was a meeting of the minds. Leaders from all sectors -- business, political and religion – coming together not to point fingers but to fund a solution.
Earlier in the day Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda addressed a recent increase violence in the city.
“There have been ebbs and flows and violence and of course we are concerned about that increase,” Brown said.
Brown continued by saying violent crime in the city is at a 10 year low. According to Buffalo Police, homicides are down compared to this time last year.
But Brown and community leaders agree – even one homicide is one too many.
Leaders at the emergency meeting discussed what they could do to be part of the solution -- be it job training or counseling.
At one point during the meeting, members of the media were asked to leave. Organizers wanted to give participants an opportunity to speak openly.
