A new fishing survey shows catch rates at record levels in New York waters on Lake Ontario.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says preliminary results from the Lake Ontario Fishing Boat Survey indicate the number of fish caught per boat trip from April to June was 227 percent above the previous five-year average for Chinook salmon.

The new figures also show the catch rate for all trout and salmon species combined set a record, more than 37 percent above the previous five-year average.

Atlantic salmon represent a relatively small portion of the Lake Ontario fishery, but it's thriving, too. The survey shows catch rates at 73 percent above the previous five-year average.

Lake Ontario is consistently ranked among the top fishing destinations in the U.S. by national publications.
