The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning pet owners about certain flea and tick products that increase the risk of seizures in cats and dogs.

According to the FDA, some animals that were treated with Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica have experienced side effects such as ataxia, seizures and muscle tremors.

This warning comes after routine monitoring of these drugs by the FDA and the agency says new information has emerged since it approved these drugs for treatment.

These drugs are in the isoxazoline class. According to the FDA, these events "were seen consistently across the isoxazoline class of prodcuts". The FDA recently approved a new product in this class called Credelio.

The FDA says they are working with manufacturers who make isoxazoline class products to include new labels on the packages that warn about these adverse effects.

The FDA noted that a these products are safe to use for the majority of animals. It is recommending veterinarians review their patients' medical histories and determine, with the pet owners, whether one of these products is appropriate for the animal.
