North Park Community School focused on educating the neighborhood

The North Park Community School is trying to live up to its name, creating a tighter community within Buffalo's North Park neighborhood.

This school is part of the Buffalo Public School District's 'New Education Bargain'. The goal is to create opportunities for success in exchange for hard work, commitment and the collaboration of students and parents. 

This community school is open to more than just the students who come through the doors every school day, it's open to their parents after school and on weekends too. Community members will be able to attend Saturday classes, with subjects ranging from tax preparation to cooking to exercise. Classes are meant to bring both parents of students and neighbors of the school together, so that the community around the school is supported and cohesive.

The staff at The North Park Community School is young and motivated, ready to take on the first group of kindergartners and pre-k students. The school will naturally age students to fill other grade levels, up to eighth grade. This allows the staff to grow each year, with the school slowly adapting to accommodate more students each year.

One big focus for the school is parent engagement. 50 percent of the school's students live within .7 miles of the school and nearly 85 percent live within 1.5 miles of the school. This creates a geographically close group of families, allowing students and parents to see several familiar faces around their neighborhood. Students feel more comfortable in classes with kids they may have already seen or know, and alternatively, parents have a close-knit support group.
