Dog, puppies found severely sick in locked car in Chautauqua County

A Sherman man is facing several animal abuse charges after four dogs were found in severely poor health while locked in a vehicle.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, 50-year-old David Hannold Sr. has been charged with overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals; failure to provide proper sustenance as well as confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle.

Investigators say deputies were called to a location in Mayville on Thursday for a report of a dog locked in a car. When deputies arrived, they found an adult dog and three puppies in the car with all the windows rolled up, no water and feces. It is believed the animals were in the car for a minimum of 20 hours.

The Chautauqua County Humane Society determined that all four dogs had contracted a potentially deadly disease, which they say could have been prevented.

Deputies say one puppy died due to complications of the disease. The other dogs are recovering from the illness.

Hannold, the owner of the dogs, is being held in the Chautauqua County Jail.
