Daniel Derenda, who abruptly retired last week as Buffalo Police Commissioner, has a new job in the private sector.
G4S Secure Solutions, a global company based in Great Britain with its U.S. headquarters in Florida, has named Derenda general manager of its Buffalo office. He will oversee "customer relationships, sales and operational activity in the Buffalo area," according to the company.
G4S has provided armed security guards and run metal detectors at all entrances of Buffalo City Hall since 2016. The city pays G4S $650,000 annually for its services under a contract approved by the common council.
Derenda's career with the Buffalo Police Department spanned more than 32 years. He served as a police officer and detective sergeant for the city's homicide squad before eventually being named commissioner by Mayor Byron Brown in 2010.
Derenda made $140,101 in 2017 and $144,353 in 2016. He will receive a pension, although the city comptroller's office says Derenda will need to be audited and it could take months to determine the amount.
Mayor Brown has appointed Deputy Commissioner Byron Lockwood to fill the commissioner position until a permanent replacement is named.
