A local dental care office is offering free oral cancer screenings during Oral Cancer Awareness Month in honor of former Buffalo Bill and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

Westermeier Martin Dental Care will offer free oral cancer screenings at its Amherst and East Aurora offices from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 12.

The dental care office chose April 12 as a tribute to Kelly because the quarterback wore the number 12 jersey during his 11 seasons with the Bills.

Kelly is a patient and personal friend to the staff at Westermeier Martin, and after Kelly announced his cancer had returned, the dental practice wanted to do something to support him.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Still, dental professionals say awareness of the disease remains low.

“Many people falsely believe that oral cancer is only associated with smoking and tobacco use. Jim Kelly is a perfect example of the fact that this disease can strike even the healthiest individuals,” Dr. Scott Westermeier, co-founder of Westermeier Martin Dental, said. “We stand with our friend Mr. Kelly in his battle against oral cancer and hope that his story will motivate patients to get screened, as early detection is critical.”

Screenings will be held at the East Aurora office, located at 950 Main Street and the Amherst office, located at 3500 Sheridan Drive.

Patients will be seen on a walk-in basis; no appointment is necessary.
