On Monday Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper announced 1660 Niagara Street will be demolished to build a paddlesport launch and waterfront park.
The property was formerly home to an auto repair shop and demolition will start Tuesday.
More than $600,000 of the project is funded by the Buffalo and Erie County Standing Committee of the Niagara River Greenway Commission.
The project hopes to restore the Scajaquada Creek and Riverside community. Demolition is phase one of the project and phase two is the clean-up of the water and land.
"The DEC has taken samples within this creek to monitor it so we can truly asses what is the real risk versus the perceived risk here at this location," said Jill Jedlicka, executive director of the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.
Congressman Brian Higgins said Congress hasn't given enough money to address the sewage overflow problems throughout the state.
"We should be investing over a trillion dollars in our infrastructure, including correcting the combined sewer overflow problem in New York State, particularly in Buffalo and western New York," said Higgins.
He says this project is another step in the right direction in securing more state and federal funding to improve waterways.
