If you saw the post "BEWARE DOG KILLER IN NIAGARA FALLS" on Facebook or Twitter you weren't alone.

The Craigslist ad originally referenced a dog found with a gunshot wound to the head. so Monday, 7 Eyewitness News looked into what was really going on in Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster said that a dog was hit by a car Friday and went unclaimed so city workers dumped the body a mile off Porter Road on city owned land.

Legally, Niagara Falls must either double bag the carcass and bury them, or bring the dead animals to a landfill.

"You know my guess for this is it's Friday. They didn't get around to burying this. They figured we'll leave it here over the weekend it's cold, we'll come back and get it on Monday. In the meantime, someone snuck into the area over the weekend took a picture of the dead dog and posted it on the internet."

Along with the carcass of the dog hit Friday was another dead dog along with some dead deer. The city says they don't know how the other dog or deer got there but no that city workers didn't put them there. Dyster said sometimes hunters illegally go on the property and dump animal remains because it's so far from the main stretch of road.

Aside from the city only the staff at Oakwood Cemetery are allowed on the site near the intersection of New and Porter Road. Cemetery staff tell 7ABC they've never seen a dead dog at the dump but occasionally see deer carcasses.
