The Erie County District Attorney's Office is investigating Buffalo's first homicide of 2018 as a possible hate crime.

Sources tell 7 Eyewitness News Tonya Harvey, 35, was the transgender woman shot and killed Tuesday afternoon on Shepard Street. Buffalo Police initially identified the victim as a male.

"The D.A.'s Office is also extremely concerned about a spike in homicides of transgender people across the country and will be, as part of this investigation, looking into whether or not this is a potential hate crime," Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said.

Police have not identified any suspects at this time.
