In an address to business leaders, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo defended his call for a higher minimum wage, saying he is also seeking lower business taxes and other efforts to help companies.

The Democratic governor addressed the Business Council of New York State Friday at its annual meeting at a Lake George resort.

Cuomo said he wants to strike a balance by reducing burdens on businesses while also ensuring workers make fair wages.

Earlier this month his administration approved the gradual phase-in of a $15 minimum wage for fast-food workers and vowed to seek the same minimum wage for all industries, a proposal that upset many business owners.

Cuomo noted that the increase would be made gradually and that business tax cuts could help offset higher labor costs.
