A Niagara County woman was killed in an early morning fire, Wednesday, in the Town of Pendleton.

Firefighters were called to home on Aiken Road, between Mapleton Road and Beach Ridge Road, about 7:00 a.m. The road was closed while the fire was being fought.

Sheriff Jim Voutour told 7 Eyewitness News fire started in a bedroom in the back of the house.  He said the woman was found dead in the front of the house.  Her name has not been released.

Voutour said the woman lives with her son.  He was not home when the fire started.  Instead, Voutour said the woman's son was at work and came home to find his house on fire.

This is in the Wendelville fire district.  Counselors will be available for the volunteer department along with law enforcement.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were on scene, as was the Sheriff's Crime Scene Unit.  Voutour said that is standard as investigators try to figure out what caused the fire.

Our 7 Eyewitness News crew at the scene reports a Customs and Border Protection officer was also at the scene.  Voutour explained there are several who live in the area.  Voutour believes the officer likely stopped to assist investigators.

The house is a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
