The New York State Parks Department announced Friday that the contaminated soil discovered at the Niagara Falls State Park Prospect Point Welcome Plaza Project has been successfully removed from the site and shipped to an approved waste facility in Ohio.

The announcement comes a little more than a week after officials told 7 Eyewitness News the soil was not dangerous and Angela Berti, a spokesperson for the park, said in a statement, “… all compromised soil has been contained, and there is no impact to health and safety.”

The materials are headed to the Waste Management Mahoning Landfill in New Springfield, Ohio.

The estimated weight of the materials is expected to be approximately 1,500 tons.

The estimated cost of clean-up and removal is $725,000.
