Warmer temperatures had people flocking to Canalside by the thousands this summer. The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation estimates the entertainment district drew 1 million visitors during the summer season.

Lieutenant governor Kathy Hochul was among those at Canalside on Tuesday to celebrate the summer success. "Not only do Western New Yorkers work hard, we like to play hard, and that play begins right here on the waterfront at Canalside," said Hochul. "To see the faces of people some who are local residents that have not been downtown in ages. People from the suburbs coming down with their jaws dropped basically in disbelief of what has happened in such a short time on our waterfront. I love to watch that."

"It's certainly been successful whether you are a jogger, a peddler or a paddler," added Robert Gioia, ECHDC Chairman. "The idea is to create a venue that there is always something going on."

Summer concerts were again a huge draw with an estimated 160,000 music lovers visiting Canalside this summer. The new Queen City Bike Ferry was another popular addition with more than 48,000 passengers using the service to the Outer Harbor.

More attractions and renovations are on the way. Construction will start later this month to extend the boardwalk and the Southern entrance to Canalside will soon see improvements to the bike path.
