Shovels will be in the ground in 2016 for the future Explore & More Children's Museum at Canalside in Buffalo.

The project has been in the works for several years and will take over the former Aud Block. An artist rendering shows how the four-story museum will fit into the current structures at Canalside.

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) announced the finalized plan Wednesday and calls it "another great day for Canalside."

The finished building will be around 42,900-square feet and will stand alone. The original plans from 2012 called for the museum to be a part of a mixed-used building in a smaller space.

The ECHDC will be putting out a request for proposals for construction of the building and will put $9 million toward the core and shell of the building. Anything beyond $9 million and the interior will have to be paid for by Explore & More, which is raising capital funds and so far has raised $7.3 million.

The building will be owned by the ECHDC for the next 40 years but it will be leased to the museum for $1 per year.
