The Buffalo Catholic Diocese announced Friday it is creating a new Office of Professional Responsibility.
The announcement follows an explosive 7 Eyewitness News I-Team investigation into the handling of sexual abuse allegations within the Buffalo Diocese.
Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone appointed Steven L. Halter as the director of responsibility to help strengthen and reinforce the Diocesan Code of Conflict.
Halter was previously a special agent in the Buffalo Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served 27 years as a special agent. Halter has experience investigating fraud, corruption, and crimes against children.
Duties will include:
- Investigating complaints of clergy or employee sex abuse and misconduct.
- Financial mismanagement or malfeasance.
- Serving as a consultant to the Diocesan Review Board.
- Preparing reports for possible judicial or management action in the event of misconduct.
Halter will also serve as a resource for the leaders of the diocese. Halter will begin his new position on October 1st.
