Update: Deputy identified in deadly shooting outside Pembroke restaurant

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office has now identified the deputy involved in Wednesday's deadly shooting outside a restaurant in Pembroke.

Undersheriff Greg Walker reports calls initially came into 911 dispatchers around 11 p.m. on Wednesday night, reporting a man with a gun making threats at the Log Cabin restaurant on Gilmore Road. The man refused to leave, and was heard telling people to "come out for a fight" and asking "where are the police."

The man is identified as 61 year-old Keith A. Kent from Albion. Family members tell Eyewitness News that Kent owned Jordan River logging in Albion with other members of the Kent family.

As deputies were driving to the restaurant, additional reports came in that the man had fired shots and had been both inside and outside the restaurant.

When deputies arrived, they saw one shot fired by the suspect. They found the suspect with a handgun in the restaurant's parking lot. Undersheriff Walker reports deputies instructed the man to put his weapon down. Walker says the suspect turned and pointed his gun at one of the deputies. Kent also made threatening comments to deputies, reportedly 'asking for a fight.' That's when investigators say Deputy Ryan W. Young, opened fire, killing the suspect.

Investigators say customers were inside the restaurant at the time. In all, approximately nine people were in the restaurant. They are being interviewed by investigators. No civilians or deputies were injured.

Genesee County Sheriff William A. Sheron Jr. released a statement on Friday saying, "Law enforcement officers go to work every day knowing that they may be required to sacrifice their own lives, or take the life of another human being, in order to fulfill their obligation of protecting the citizens of our communities.  Deputy Young's actions on Wednesday night did just that."

Deputies in Genesee County wear body cameras, and the sheriff's office reports the cameras worn by responding deputies were operational at the time of the incident. The cameras are being reviewed. New York State Police are now conducting an independent investigation at the request of the sheriff's office, in addition to the office's own internal investigation. The restaurant is being treated as an active crime scene, and state police say they will investigate this case like any other death investigation.

Deputies were able to recover the suspect's weapon from the scene. The suspect's motive is unknown.
