American idol is one of those iconic shows most of us have watched and obsessed over at some point in our lives. Today, for the first time ever, the hit series stopped at Canalside to hold auditions.

Around 2,000 contestants came out to Buffalo for their chance to follow in the footsteps of famous singers like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson.

Fans got in line at the crack of dawn for their chance at winning the infamous golden ticket to the next round.

"I've been waiting to try out for American Idol since I started watching the show when I was little like 10-years-old. So 2 o'clock isn't that long of a wait," contestant Marsyia Paradis said.

However, only a handful made it to the next round in Atlanta, not to be confused with the televised auditions.

One of those people was Jairo Sanchez. He is originally from Puerto Rico but now lives in Buffalo.

When he first heard about the auditions he said he was nervous.

"I was like oh my god, I need to practice. I'm nervous just by hearing the name. I was really nervous," he said.

7 Eyewitness News caught up with him after his successful audition.

"Oh my god, I almost passed away. I couldn't believe it," Sanchez said.

Katie Perry and Luke Bryan weren't the day's judges. Instead, it was Idol producers awarding the golden tickets.

This audition was a part of American Idol's Bus Tour that travels from city to city holding open auditions. There are only three more stops left on the tour in Columbus Ohio, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Charleston, West Virginia.

Correction: The number originally stated in the on-air piece says 5,000 people auditioned. That was the number given to us by an ABC public relation official. That number has since changed to around 2,000 people.
