Active shooter training drills constantly evolve

Training for a mass shooting like Wednesday’s in San Bernardino is nothing new to the Cheektowaga Police Department.

They, along with plenty of other police agencies in Western New York, do drills specializing in active shooter situations multiple times each year.

Assistant Chief Jim Speyer says you can never be 100 percent ready but it’s all about adapting. “You have a basic plan, but that plan needs to be adjusted to what you're faced with.”

Speyer says they train for almost every situation but these incidents are rarely the exact same.

“We all know that what happens today may not necessarily happen tomorrow the same way. In fact, chances are it won't, but you could be pretty certain that this will happen again somewhere in this country.”

And this training isn’t just happening at the state level. In a statement sent to 7 Eyewitness News, New York State Police said, “State Police receive ongoing training on a number of scenarios, including active shooter situations. That training includes work with our local law enforcement partners and other public safety agencies.”
