The Western New York Land Conservancy held its 22nd annual Membership Meeting and Reception on Friday, June 7, at the Main House on the grounds of the beautiful Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora. With more than 150 people from throughout Western New York attending, it was one of the most successful events in the history of the Land Conservancy.

The event began by honoring the outstanding contributions of two Land Conservancy members, Michael B. Powers and Edward Fuchs.

Powers, an attorney at Phillips Lytle LLP and town justice for Clarence, was awarded the 2013 Henry J. Kreher Conservation Award. Land Conservancy Emeritus Board member David Floyd, said “Mike Powers made the Clarence Greenprint — a $12.5 million bond to fund open space preservation that was overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2002 and renewed in 2012 — a reality.” Funds from the Clarence Greenprint have already helped protect more than 1,300 acres of farms and forests. The program even helped increase the Town of Clarence’s municipal bond rating.

Fuchs, a member and past president of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society and a resident of East Aurora, was awarded the 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award. Executive Director Nancy Smith said “Ed Fuchs’ selfless commitment to service, to conservation, and to environmental education make our region a better place to live.” Among his many contributions, Ed volunteers as a preserve steward at the Cazenovia Creek Nature Sanctuary in East Aurora. He also helps lead botanical tours on Land Conservancy preserves.

After the award ceremony, the Land Conservancy elected and re-elected several board members. Larry Brooks, a North Buffalo resident and retired Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper staff member, was elected to his first full term on the board. Jessica Owley, a professor from the University at Buffalo Law School, presented on the impacts of climate change on land conservation, and was elected to her first term on the board.

Those re-elected to serve second terms included Land Conservancy President Kathy Lasher, a CPA from the Town of Aurora who was the operations and finance director at MassMutual's Buffalo agency for 20 years; Land Conservancy Vice President Paul Lehman who lives in North Tonawanda and, although retired after working nearly 38 years as the agriculture and community issues program leader for Cornell University Cooperative Extension in Niagara County, currently serves as the interim director for the Cooperative Extension of Orleans County; and Land Conservancy Treasurer Rick Vilonen who is from the Town of Amherst, owns Ben Brook Farm, and is the chair of the Amherst IDA.

After board elections, Nancy Smith highlighted some of the Land Conservancy’s current projects. In 2012, the Land Conservancy reached a milestone; they protected their 5,000th acre of land. To build on that momentum, this year the Land Conservancy began working to create the Stella Niagara Preserve on an exceptional ecologically and culturally significant property on the Niagara River in Lewiston. The property is the third longest privately owned river frontage in Niagara County. It will be the first nature preserve along the Niagara River to be owned and operated by a not-for-profit organization.

Also this year, as part of the Niagara Escarpment Legacy Project in Niagara County, the Land Conservancy began working with community stakeholders, landowners, scientists from Ecology & Environment, and members of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society to complete the first systematic, multi-site inventory of plants and animals ever done in this geologically and ecologically unique landscape. The Niagara Escarpment Legacy Project also includes many acres of grassland restoration and will result in the protection of new properties along the Escarpment.

At the finale of the event, many attendees joined Chuck Rosenburg, a renowned local biologist and owl expert, on an owl prowl of Knox Farm State Park. They all got to see a pair of Eastern Screech Owls fly in and call to each other in the trees overhead. It was a perfect way to end an exceptional evening.

This year's event sponsors included Arrowhead Spring Vineyards, Holt Appraisals, Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., and M&T Bank at the Gold level; AXA Advisors, Otis Eastern Service, Inc., Phillips Lytle LLP, and Rupp, Baase, Pfalzgraf, Cunninghum & Coppola, LLC at the Silver level; and Astronics Corporation, Daily's Custom Gourmet Catering, Farmers and Artisans, Gaines Kriner Elliott, LLP, Kreher's Farm Fresh Eggs, and Regency Builders, LLC at the Bronze level.

The Western New York Land Conservancy is a regional, not-for-profit land trust that permanently protects land with significant conservation value in Western New York for future generations. The Land Conservancy envision a future in which open spaces, working lands, wildlife habitat and scenic beauty are cherished and protected as part of the landscape and character of Western New York. The Land Conservancy is one of 1,700 land trusts nationwide, including 90 in New York State. Land trusts have protected 40 million acres over the last 20 years.

When Msgr. Kevin O’Neill, canonical administrator for Mary Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School, welcomed students back to school in September, he presented them with a challenge. During the 2012-13 school year, he asked the students to come up with innovative ways to raise money to support the missions in Nicaragua.

On Thursday, June 13, the students joined Msgr. O’Neill at Queen of Martyrs Church on George Urban Boulevard to present a check for $3,000 to Ann Marie Zon, who was on hand as a representative of the Nicaragua missions. The money was raised through a wide variety of efforts, from classroom fundraisers tied into spelling and math activities, to walks and baked good sales.

Soccer Shots is hosting a summer season for kids ages 2-8 in Delaware Park. It begins June 22 and will be held Saturdays from 9-10:30, Sundays from 3-4:30 and Wednesdays from 5-6. Each session is 30-minutes long. There will also be a one-week camp at SportsPlex in North Tonawanda from July 15-19 from 9-12 each day! Soccer Shots offers children a non-competitive introduction to sports, which is important when teaching kids to lead an active lifestyle! Cost and registration information is available on our website: www.soccershotsbuffalo.com . You can also learn more by calling 716-408-3071 or e-mailing buffalo@soccershots.org .

With three kids of their own, Mark Miller and his wife Maureen wanted to find a way to introduce their children to sports. But Mark, a former elementary school physical education teacher, and Maureen, an elementary school special education teacher, found most programs they had to choose from were competitive and placed children in a team setting that did little to develop their individual skills. That’s when SoccerShots was born.

SoccerShots is a non-competitive program that encourages kids to go outside and be active while teaching them individual skills and giving them a positive experience in sports at a young age. Coaches lead age-appropriate creative games that utilize a child’s imagination and teach kids soccer skills – making learning fun! Some day, kids will grow up and everything will be a competition – from getting a job, to finding a spouse, to even finding a decent parking spot! SoccerShots was created to let kids keep their fun-loving nature while not putting them in an exclusionary, highly competitive arena. Introducing children to sports at a young age is fantastic to encourage a healthy lifestyle, and SoccerShots provides a great first impression.

Mark (now Coach Mark!) and Maureen held their first season in January 2012 and had a little over 70 kids partake. The following spring, over 600 children took park in SoccerShots at facilities all over Buffalo and Western New York! With programs for kids aged 2-8, SoccerShots is growing by leaps and bounds thanks to parents and facilities that appreciate the message SoccerShots delivers to kids each and every session: have fun!

More about the directors: Coach Mark has been playing soccer since the third grade and has a degree in education. He and Maureen have worked hard to build a staff that shares their passion and SoccerShots vision of allowing kids to be kids while introducing them to sports and helping them learn the fun side of physical activity. Coach Mark and Maureen have three children, and with SoccerShots off the ground and running, they’re happy to be able to provide their own kids with a program that gives a positive first impression with sports.

Coach Mark is always available for media inquiries and can answer questions about childhood sports education, summer activities, healthy living, youth activity and more! If you ever need to reach him, his number is: (716) 408-3071. You can also reach him by e-mail at: coachmark@soccershots.org .

Citybration to welcome summer in WNY

http://www.wkbw.com/younews/211820761.html

Chances are you probably won’t be awake at 1:04 a.m. Friday, June 21, when the sun will be directly overhead of the Tropic of Cancer, marking the official start of Summer 2013. But back here in Western New York, Buffalo Citybration will be making a major announcement about our summer season at 5:04 p.m. Thursday, June 20, giving us an eight-hour head start on the season that festival-loving Buffalonians love most!

Citybration has a long history in Buffalo, one that dates back to 1907! Back then it was referred to as Buffalo Old Home Week, a week-long celebration of the city that showcased its many assets. The intent was twofold: To bring back those who had left the area for various reasons and to help keep our best and brightest here. It worked so well they didn’t bother doing it again ... until just seven years ago, that is.

In 2006, another Buffalo Old Home Week was clearly needed, and a group of passionate volunteers were able to bring together a fair facsimile of the event first held nearly a century ago. A centennial celebration was held in 2007, and the event has been held annually ever since. It took on a new name, Buffalo Citybration, and became a festive four-day affair showcasing the best of Buffalo and Western New York.

“At 5:04 p.m. Thursday, Buffalo Citybration will kick off summer in Buffalo, giving us a full eight-hour head start on our jam-packed festival season,” said Citybration Executive Director Marti Gorman. “Rather than producing another four-day extravaganza, Buffalo Citybration is now dedicated to celebrating our city all summer long – and you’re invited to come along for the ride! We’ll be kicking off our new ‘Buffalo — There’s So Much to Love’ campaign. It’s designed to keep Western New Yorker’s informed so we don’t miss any of our many local events, festivals, tours and cultural treasures. Each of these is an opportunity to share our pride, and shamelessly brag about what make this such a great place to live.”

The public is invited to kick off summer in Buffalo by attending the Citybration press conference at 5:04 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Market Arcade, a Buffalo landmark located at 617 Main St. in Buffalo. The festivities will take place in the Buffalo Niagara Visitors Center Gallery on the building’s first floor.

“We chose this location because the gallery currently has on display an impressive collection of outstanding Buffalo photographs by well-known photographer Joe Cascio,” said Gorman. “And this beautiful building also houses numerous examples of what Citybration will showcase – Buffalo Tours, Shakespeare in Delaware Park, CEPA, the Darwin Martin House Corporation, not to mention Visit Buffalo Niagara, our community’s loudest cheerleader.”
