My six year old daughter amazed me last night. She asked about the tornado that took out a school in Oklahoma. I explain what her little ears could handle. She looked at me scared and concerned, she said she wished she could help. A but later she came up to me and said how she had seen kids with a lemonade stand and if she could have one with our yard sale this weekend. So I looked up reliable foundations for Oklahoma and saw on the American Red Cross you can donate directly on their site. So we have made a sign and went and bought cups. She is beyond excited to help all the little kids like her. So Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th she will be setting up her stand at our house in hopes to get donations for Oklahoma.

“A Fighter's Chance” by Niagara Falls native Gabriel Gonzalez is the most recent release from No Frills Buffalo publishing company. No Frills Buffalo also published Gonzalez’s first book, “Legend of the Phoenix, Rise of Crescent,” in early 2012.

Gonzalez is a graduate of Niagara Catholic High School and Buffalo State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2005 and minored in religious studies. When he was just 15 years old, he and a friend were hired to clean out the upstairs of an abandoned building to make way for a new boxing gym. When the gym opened, Gonzalez signed up to see how he would like it and has never looked back. Boxing taught him how to be self-confident, disciplined and patient, and changed his outlook on life.

Fifteen years later he still goes to that gym three days a week and now helps to train young fighters. While the novel is fictional, it sums up what fighters go through trying to make it in one of the world’s most brutal and dangerous sports. What he has seen over the years in the sport of boxing — and the dreams that he has seen both shattered and accomplished — have inspired him to write this story.

In “A Fighter’s Chance,” Aiden Caliber has found the one escape in his life ... boxing. In a sport that demands dedication from the soul and determination of the heart, Aiden fights to deal with the struggles of everyday life while attempting to accomplish the one dream he has held onto since he was a child — to become the boxing champion of the world. With Coach Kay at his side, Aiden’s journey is challenged by his dark past, a political boxing world, and by trying to understand the one lesson his coach has been trying to teach to him since he was a boy. He discovers that the road to the championship isn’t just defined by what is accomplished inside of the ring, but by what is overcome outside of it as well.

Books published by No Frills Buffalo can be purchased online at www.amazon.com, www.powells.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, www.ECKO.com and www.nofrillsbuffalo.com. Several local bookstores also carry the No Frills Buffalo collection, including Talking Leaves; Dog Ears Bookstore; The Second Reader; Monkey See, Monkey Do; Lift Bridge Books in Brockport and Buffalo Street Books in Ithaca.

Buffalo Bishop Richard J. Malone and several area priests celebrated Mass at Queen of Martys Church in Cheektowaga on Tuesday, April 30, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Mary Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School.

Among those concelebrating the Mass were Msgr. Kevin O’Neill, canonical administrator of Mary Queen of Angels School, and Fr. Louis Klein, pastor of Queen of Martyrs Church. Following Mass, Bishop Malone enjoyed lunch with the students and faculty, toured the school and visited every classroom.

Mary Queen of Angels School was formed in 2003 following the merger of Queen of Martyrs School and Our Lady Help of Christians School. In 2007, Mary Queen of Angels was designated a Regional Catholic School. Today, it is the only remaining Catholic elementary school in the town of Cheektowaga and boasts an enrollment of 209 students.

For more information about Mary Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School or to schedule a tour of the facility, please call the school office at 895-6280 or visit www.mqangels.com. For daily updates, follow the school on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MaryQueenofAngelsSchool.

The Rose Garden Early Childhood Center, located in a beautifully renovated “green” building at 257 Lafayette Ave. in Buffalo, still has a limited number of openings for its creative toddler programs. The Center offers half-day and full-day programs for children from 18 months to 5 years of age in a homelike environment where domestic arts and physical development are the core of a play-based curriculum.

Balancing creative free play with teacher-directed activities, emphasis is placed on practical life skills. Traditional games and fingerplays provide opportunities for children to imitate healthy movement and increase both large and small motor skills. Children go outdoors daily, spending longer periods outside when the weather cooperates! The on-site playground has been specially designed to help children develop their creativity and physical stamina. Emphasis is also placed on warm speech, live singing, verses and stories rather than an environment filled with technology, television and videos.

Snacks and lunches are delicious, wholesome, nut-free and focused on organic grains and local fruits and vegetables. Natural, unprocessed and organic foods are provided whenever possible, and children are often involved in the food preparation. All recipes have been “tested” by the children and adapted for taste.

For more information or to schedule a personal tour of the facility, please call 816-0078. Tours are typically scheduled at 9 a.m. Tuesdays unless other arrangements are required. Additional information can also be found at www.therosegarden.us.

Russell Cleversley has been part of the Western New York arts scene for some four decades. In 1972, his artistic interests began to surface when he accepted a position doing art reproduction work for a local company. As his knowledge of the art industry expanded, his own artistic talents emerged. And today, the well-known artist is also the proud owner of Russell’s Atelier, an artist services center and art gallery located at 10 Center Road in West Seneca.

A unique business that appeals to the creative, Russell’s Atelier offers a wide variety of professional-quality services as well as a spacious gallery, opened in July 2012, featuring many examples of his freehand digital fine art. The “Pixel Artisan” is recognized as a premier digital artist who paints highly detailed and convincing images. His works are realistic, diverse and appeal to a broad spectrum of art admirers around the world. Many of his works are signed limited editions.

Upon entering the building located at the much-traveled intersection of Center Road and Seneca Street, first-time visitors are sure to be surprised by the size of the main gallery and the many examples of Cleversley’s eye-catching work. But beyond the gallery walls and hidden from sight is an impressive art services facility that caters to both artisans and art lovers alike.

In fact, Cleversley takes great pride in his professional art reproduction services. He has a well-equipped digital studio where artwork is photographed; he then meticulously edits and proofs the digital files to ensure a near perfect match to the original artwork before producing the museum-quality giclée art prints.

Cleversley also provides a variety of other artistic services, including high-resolution scanning, professional matting and framing, image editing, mounting, laminating and commercial printing. Russell recently installed a Xerox digital printer to provide small-run print orders. His goal is to provide a complete host of vital artist services.

For more information on Russell’s Atelier artist services center and art gallery, please call 587-2500, email russ@russellsatelier.com or stop by during gallery hours. The gallery is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Frequents updates can also be found by following Russell’s Atelier on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RussellsAtelier.
