The locker room fight that canceled Gowanda's 2010 lacrosse season was a "locker box" between 2 students. When it was over, one was sucker punched in the side of his head and his brother stepped in to defend him. 21 kids were in the locker room. Some were watching and cheering on. Locker boxing is an agreed upon fight between 2 JV teammates who wear their gear. It is not done out of anger and the 2 involved shook hands following the fight. There were 15 players (and coaches) upstairs and outside during this fight. When the rest of the seniors, varsity players came into the locker room, it was broken up. One player taped the fight and posted it on Youtube. The 3 players who fought were suspend from school according to the punishment for fighting in the handbook. Both the JV and Varsity were suspended for 2 games and the incident was investigated. It was determined by the superintendent that the season be canceled. There is no rule in the handbook or in the sports contract that one student is to put himself in the middle of fight to stop it. There are 15 kids who were not aware of what was going on and not involved. Plenty to finish out the season and go onto the playoffs. Unfortunately, at this point, it is too late for them to start up the season again but there is an appeal at the BOE meeting on Wednesday May 19th at 7 p.m. These boys did not deserve this punishment, please come out in support of them. Also, I urge everyone to get the full story as during a parent meeting Monday, May 10th, the story was exaggerated and missing a few key points when told by the superintendent. This leads us to believe it was not properly presented to the BOE during the executive session and it was also not presented in it's entirety to Channel 7 news.
