Piebald White-Tailed Deer

Rare White-Tailed Deer behind back yard

My mother and I were just going out to get lunch when we spotted a strange looking animal behind our neighbor's yard. At first, we believed it was a dog, then once we realized it was a deer we thought she was simply covered in snow. But when we investigated a little further, which meant just looking behind our fence from our back deck into the wooded area, we realized she was actually white with little patches of brown. Never seeing anything like this before in our lives-- and we've had deer behind our yards for as long as I can remember-- I did some research on the web and found out some more about our little friend. It turns out it's a genetic condition which is called being 'piebald.' On the website I found, it is not a harmful condition, but she was visibly shorter than her companions. The website also said that typically less than 1% of white-tailed deer are affected, so she's a special one indeed!

I saw a deer like this at the center of a large group of deer in a clearing right off the william street exit from the 90. It is truly a sight to behold. The one I saw is not the one in your picture, so theres at least two in this immediate area!
