My husband decided this year he needed to use his power tools to carve our daughter's pumpkin. It was actually very effective. He used a drywall saw to cut out the shapes and a circular drill to create the round eyes. This saved us about three hours of work (it usually takes us about 4 hours start to finish to carve four pumpkins).
The handyman's way to carve a pumpkin!
