1st Wildflower - Skunk Cabbage

1st Wildflower of Northeast

Found on the Joe Panza Nature Trail in Alden the Skunk Cabbage flower breaks ground in Febuary and actually melts the surrounding snow... This one is 4-inches tall already... Growing in moist to wet woodlands the flower comes up before its leaves... The spathe can get six inches tall and shelters a club-like spadix which is covered with very tiny flowers... Its odor is fetid which attracts the insects that pollinate it...
