Chances are you probably won’t be awake at 1:04 a.m. Friday, June 21, when the sun will be directly overhead of the Tropic of Cancer, marking the official start of Summer 2013. But back here in Western New York, Buffalo Citybration will be making a major announcement about our summer season at 5:04 p.m. Thursday, June 20, giving us an eight-hour head start on the season that festival-loving Buffalonians love most!
Citybration has a long history in Buffalo, one that dates back to 1907! Back then it was referred to as Buffalo Old Home Week, a week-long celebration of the city that showcased its many assets. The intent was twofold: To bring back those who had left the area for various reasons and to help keep our best and brightest here. It worked so well they didn’t bother doing it again ... until just seven years ago, that is.
In 2006, another Buffalo Old Home Week was clearly needed, and a group of passionate volunteers were able to bring together a fair facsimile of the event first held nearly a century ago. A centennial celebration was held in 2007, and the event has been held annually ever since. It took on a new name, Buffalo Citybration, and became a festive four-day affair showcasing the best of Buffalo and Western New York.
“At 5:04 p.m. Thursday, Buffalo Citybration will kick off summer in Buffalo, giving us a full eight-hour head start on our jam-packed festival season,” said Citybration Executive Director Marti Gorman. “Rather than producing another four-day extravaganza, Buffalo Citybration is now dedicated to celebrating our city all summer long – and you’re invited to come along for the ride! We’ll be kicking off our new ‘Buffalo — There’s So Much to Love’ campaign. It’s designed to keep Western New Yorker’s informed so we don’t miss any of our many local events, festivals, tours and cultural treasures. Each of these is an opportunity to share our pride, and shamelessly brag about what make this such a great place to live.”
The public is invited to kick off summer in Buffalo by attending the Citybration press conference at 5:04 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Market Arcade, a Buffalo landmark located at 617 Main St. in Buffalo. The festivities will take place in the Buffalo Niagara Visitors Center Gallery on the building’s first floor.
“We chose this location because the gallery currently has on display an impressive collection of outstanding Buffalo photographs by well-known photographer Joe Cascio,” said Gorman. “And this beautiful building also houses numerous examples of what Citybration will showcase – Buffalo Tours, Shakespeare in Delaware Park, CEPA, the Darwin Martin House Corporation, not to mention Visit Buffalo Niagara, our community’s loudest cheerleader.”
