Imagine yourself standing in the middle of Jim Ball Stadium on Erie Community College South campus with 150 of the world’s most talented musical athletes, learning what it takes to perform at the highest level. On June 27, Western New York youth and adults alike will have the chance to do this and more with world-renowned drum corps, The Cadets.
Music is Cool, hosted by The Cadets, and presented by Drum Corps International in cooperation with Drums Along the Waterfront and Erie Community College, returns the finest in music and marching educational programming to Western New York. Participants will experience everything from warm-up to sectional rehearsal to a “show-and-tell session” with the corps.
“The Cadets were scheduled for an early to visit Orchard Park to utilize Ralph Wilson Stadium for rehearsal in preparation for the Drums Along the Waterfront - Tour of Champions competition on Aug. 5,” states Jack Gaylord Jr., president, Drums Along the Waterfront. “As they are known throughout the country for their educational programming, I asked corps Director George Hopkins if they would provide such an event for us while here. Western New York is extremely fortunate to have this opportunity to witness first-hand one of the world’s top drum corps. Music enthusiasts and fans will get a feel for what it takes to win 10 world championships and finish as one of the top five world corps year after year.”
The morning starts at 10 a.m. with registration followed by the day’s first activities beginning with the chance to join The Cadets warm-ups. Participants will be able to witness the corps in action as well as interact and perform with the drum corps members. Participants are encouraged to bring their Instruments and guard equipment for instruction and the ability to get a feel for what being a member of a world-class drum corps really feels like. The educational program will end with participants and corps members showing what they learned in a fun “show-and-tell” session, followed by a performance by The Cadets.
Admission to “Music is Cool” is free. Registration will take place at Building 6 on the campus of Erie Community College South in Orchard Park. Instructional materials will be provided by the corps.
