Pepie, limping in her cage.

Help Free Peppy

This is currently in Dunkirk, NY

Sixteen year-old female Husky named Peppy has called her 10.5' length by 3.0' width x 3.5' height outdoor metal cage home for nine years.

Her living situation was noticed three years ago.

Offers were made to buy her, walk her, build a fence in the yard and so on. The owner has yet to take people up on their offer.

Dunkirk animal control and cruelty investigator were contacted regarding Peppy's living conditions, they responded by saying her living conditions were legal. The entire metal enclosure is off the ground and roughly consists of five feet of metal grate flooring in which Peppy stands on. The owners states she is a "deer tracking dog" and that he took her out every Saturday to track deer--3 yrs ago. Her age and arthritis (which she is taking medication for) may be preventing her from doing this anymore. According to a neighbor Peppy is taken out of the cage only a few times a week. Continuously walking on a metal grate floor and taking medication for arthritis equals an uncomfortable and excruciating situation for her. Not to mention the constant exposure to the outdoor elements and lack of socialization.

Recently, pictures were taken of her and shared in order to get her help.

I went to http://lakotasong.com/blog/?p=21 - the conditions this dog is existing in are SHOCKING! If this can be considered legal then there is something very wrong with the law,or,more likely, the way it is being applied. Unbelievably inhumane!

It may be legal to have the dog in that cage due to size and construction. I can understand having hunting dogs and such, but why keep the dog if it doesnt even hunt any longer. Be a good person and let the dog have some happy times before it dies.

Its a shame to see peppy in theses living conditions, as a viewer of anaimal cop shows and a lover of animals, theres living conditions cannot be legal, and think more investigation of the wellness of peppy should be taken.

There are conflicting reports as to how often Pepie is walked, but it sounds like the NY law is being broken: "Any such agent or officer may also lawfully take possession of any animal... which for more than twelve successive hours has been confined"

The owner and the officials should be put in that cage and then make their ignorant comments about the legality of that situation. It doesn't begin to address her need for exercise or socialization. My heart breaks for this poor soul.

How very sad and unfortunate for this animal. Some people just don't get it. These are pack animals and they crave socialization. A life of isolation is horribly cruel. Laws need to be changed, both on a state and local level.
