On Thursday, May 15, the Buffalo Ukrainian community remembered the 75th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine Genocide, by hosting the Ukrainian Genocide Torch. The torch, which originally was lite in Ukraine, will travel through a total of 32 countries and 23 American cities, before it returns to Kyiv, which is the capital of Ukraine, in November. This torch relay is being held to raise worldwide awareness of this genocide. Thursday's solemn remembrance included a Panachyda (memorial service), performed by Buffalo area Ukrainian priests and songs sung by the Ukrainian women's choir "Mryia".

On Tuesday, May 13, the Buffalo Common Council adopted a resolution commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor, (which is Ukrainian for famine genocide).

The genocide occurred in Ukraine in 1932-33,
when Stalin and the Communist regime confiscated all grain produced by Ukrainian farmers, producing a horrible famine in which up to 10 million Ukrainians died. This was planned genocide, in order to break the backbone of the Ukrainian nation and to crush the revival of the Ukrainian independence.
