Rome, Italy, Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2006, Mary Clare Bobak age 4 who is Autistic is in her stroller in St. Peter's Square with her family waiting to hear Pope Benedict's message. Her brother in law who runs a study abroad program and speaks a little german, asks a Sister who is wheeling up disabled people to the main platform, if Mary Clare could go with them. "Ya" she replied and off Mary Clare and her mom went toward the main alter. Every stop point manned by a Swiss Guard the Sister "she's with us" and they let them through. Sure enough up the ramp they went and were in the first row to the right side of Pope Benedict. Her family was so excited! But, the best part was when the Wednesday audience ended and Mary Clare was wheeled right up to Pope Benedict who smiled and touched the left side of her face. She came back to family who was so excited. But, if anything could top that, as they were leaving St. Peter's Square, Mary Clare said, "Papa!" This was the first word she had every said. Mary Clare was speaking! Something her family was never sure she would ever do. From that time on she has spoken new words every day.
