I am currently a science teacher at the newest of the local charter high schools, Health Sciences Charter School. We are in our third year as a school and our second year enrolled as a section 6 sports school. Much like charter schools throughout the city we lack the necessary funding to support many of the traditional sports teams that the local district schools are fortunate to have. One of the sports that our students frequently ask for is football, but due to the high costs of insurance and equipment we are unable to provide it to them, as are the other local charters. To compensate the Athletic Directors have put together a Flag Football League that meets every Saturday morning at Front Park in the city. The students from all of the schools look so forward to playing and have so much fun each week. Currently, Health Sciences is undefeated at 5-0 and only have one week of play left before the championships. Our boys are so talented and exhibit such great sportsmanship that it saddens me when Charters do not receive the same weekly highlight during the high school sports segments. It would be fantastic for these students to get the recognition that they deserve. The boys play again next Saturday at 9 am and the final game is the week after. Please consider highlighting the charters during this football season and give our students and ADs the credit they deserve!!! I would like to add that the Health Sciences Boys JV Basketball team was 12-0 last season, which is unheard of for a team in its first year...many of those talented boys also play on the Flag Football Team. Thank you for your time and consideration, I think the entire Buffalo Charter School Community would love to see us spotlighted a little more frequently for the environment and experiences that we provide to our students.
