Falcon above doorway outside Babeville on Delaware Ave., taken 040708

Falcon above Babeville

These photos were taken Monday, April 7, 2008 on the Delaware Ave. side of Ani DiFranco's Babeville (aka The Church, Asbury Hall, Righteous Babe Records Admin. Offices/Hallwalls and performance space). The falcon has been perched above the doorway facing Delaware Ave., near Tupper, and was observed by the staff and artists at Starlight Studio throughout the day. (Starlight is a day habilitation program for Learning Disabilities of WNY and is across the street from the falcon's roost). The falcon, which is still out there, occasionally preens it's feathers, sometimes seems to be sleeping, but mostly is just observing its surroundings. This writer let people use binoculars to get a closer look at the bird. It may be a Peregrine falcon, a bird on the endangered species list; possibly related to Aldora, the Peregrine falcon which had the live web cam on her at city hall? This ones eyes are a greenish yellow, feathers are mostly white with some black to brownish. Someone suggested this might be a winter coat.

This is a Red-tailed Hawk, not a falcon. Go to Cornell University website All About Birds for more identification information.
