The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market, a Western New York tradition featuring more than 35 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local products, remains open for the 2012 season. Hours at the open-air market are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine.
Providing musical entertainment on Saturday, Oct. 13, will be Casey Bolles from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. by Azure James. Wine-tasting will be courtesy of Freedom Run Winery and Niagara Landing Wine Cellars.
The market welcomes several community groups this Saturday, including the SPCA Whisker Wag’n, Yelp Buffalo, Viridian Energy, Child & Family Services and the Canisius Entrepreneurship Organization. Weather permitting, Martin Cooks will be cooking up some great breakfast and lunch offerings utilizing market produce and products.
The Electronic Benefit Transfer system is once again in place at the market for the 2012 season. The EBT system allows individuals receiving public assistance to purchase products from eligible market vendors. EBT patrons who purchase $10 worth of market tokens will receive an additional $2 coupon to be used at the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market. Sponsors of the EBT coupon program include the Lexington Co-operative Market and the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition. The coupon initiative will continue until funds earmarked for the program have been exhausted.
And thanks to New York State’s Fresh Connect Farmers’ Markets program, participants will also receive an additional $2 rebate check for every $5 EBT purchase. Therefore, anyone purchasing $10 worth of EBT tokens at the market will now receive a $2 coupon and $4 in rebate checks, allowing them to purchase $16 worth of merchandise from eligible vendors. A $5 EBT purchase will result in a $2 rebate check. Rebate checks must be redeemed by Nov. 15, 2012.
The market is also partnering with the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition to promote a smoke-free environment at the market this season.
