Carrousel Chat: "PTC Carousels"

Though there were many carrousel companies during the “Golden Age” of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, only a handful are considered to have been major manufacturers. One of these was undoubtedly the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, or PTC. In the next installment of our free Carrousel Chat lecture series the museum is pleased to have author Richard A. Gardner on hand to discuss his new book PTC Carousels: The History of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousels (published by The Connecticut Press). Gardner, a retired Massachusetts native who now resides in San Jose, CA has had a long-time interest in carrousels, and has spent the last several years researching and photographing PTC carrousels across the United States and Canada. This illustrated reference work featuring more than 300 photographs is the first comprehensive history of the legendary company’s hand-carved carrousels produced by some of the grand masters of the art. PTC produced or retrofitted some 93 carrousels from 1904-1934, all of which are represented in Gardner’s work, including those that have been destroyed or are no longer available to the public.
Join us on Monday, September 24 at 7:00pm to hear Gardner discuss his book, the history of PTC carrousels, and his journey to document them through photographs. A book signing will follow the discussion.
