Doors Open walking tour planned

Now entering its 11th year, Doors Open London will take place Sept. 29-30 in nearby London, Ontario. Themed "Defending a Nation," the 2012 event will mark the bicentennial anniversary of the War of 1812.

Doors Open London opens up historic spaces throughout London, free of charge, for residents and visitors to engage with. The event has become widely recognized as a weekend of communal gathering, celebration and recognition for London’s numerous, significant landmarks.

This year’s Doors Open event is a self-guided walking tour in one of London's most historic neighborhoods, adjacent to the city's original commercial district and including a rich diversity in architectural styles. The tour is prepared by Architectural Conservancy of Ontario's London Branch (ACO London).

Guided tours will also be held at 2 and 3 p.m. Saturday at the sidewalk gate of Eldon House. Participants will enjoy a leisurely walk through one of London's most historic neighborhoods, learning as they go about the city's early residential and commercial history. They will see a rich variety of architectural styles, including examples of how heritage buildings can be adapted for re-use.

This weekend heritage event will offer access to architectural and historical sites not usually open to the public, with most sites open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call (519) 930-2140 or visit www.doorsopenlondon.ca.
