South Buffalo Catholic School will host an all-day Taste of South Buffalo food and music festival in Cazenovia Park on Saturday, Aug. 18. In addition to numerous local eateries and food trucks serving up their culinary specialties, other highlights of the event include live entertainment, the Mike Diggins Memorial 5K Walk/Run, an attempt at the world’s largest split club and much more!
Festivities kick off at 8 a.m. with the Diggins Memorial 5K, a USA Track & Field-sanctioned event. Mike Diggins was a long-time contributor to Western New York running community. Growing up in the Old First Ward, Diggins was proud of his Irish heritage and his strong ties to South Buffalo. An avid runner from a young age, Diggins starred on the track and cross-country teams at Bishop Timon High School and Mississippi State. He was dedicated to Catholic education as both a teacher and coach, working at Bishop Turner High School and St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute for nearly 40 years. He served as a role model and mentor to all who knew him.
At 11 a.m., the Buffalo Warriors basketball team of the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League will take on South Buffalo Catholic School parents in an exhibition game. At 6 p.m., there will be a live taping of the “Duck, Duck, Goose” television game show, followed by the split club drawing at 9:30 p.m. Organizers of the event are hoping to break the world’s record for the biggest split club ever given away — $100,000! A 15-foot pool package from Zappia Pools & Spas of Lackawanna will also be awarded as a consolation prize.
Musical entertainment will include the Jane Jane Soundsystem from noon to 5 p.m., recording artist Zack Joseph at 5 p.m., and the band So Far So Good at 8 p.m.
