The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market, a Western New York tradition featuring more than 35 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local products, will open for the 2012 season on Saturday, May 12. Hours at the open-air market are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine.
Providing musical entertainment during the opening weekend will be singer/guitarist Kate Shaffer from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the Hutch Tech High School Six String Circus Guitar Ensemble from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wine-tasting will be courtesy of Freedom Run Winery and Niagara Landing Wine Cellar.
The market welcomes several community groups this Saturday, including the SPCA Whisker Wag’n, the Border Community Services Project, GrowWNY.org and Yelp Buffalo.
The Electronic Benefit Transfer system is once again in place at the market for the 2012 season. The EBT system allows individuals receiving public assistance to purchase products from eligible market vendors. Sponsoring the EBT program in 2012 are the Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo, Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition and the Lexington Co-operative Market. Additionally, the market is partnering with the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition to promote a smoke-free environment at the market this season.
The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market would also like to congratulate Scott Webb of Grand Island, winner of the market’s annual poster competition. Webb’s poster is on display in stores and restaurants throughout the Elmwood Village, and will be featured on signage at the market. A limited number of free copies of the 2012 poster will be available at the market this Saturday.
