The assignment: Drop an egg to the ground from a second-floor window without cracking the egg’s fragile shell.
That’s exactly what a group of excited fifth-graders at Annunciation School in Elma were charged with this week, and working in small groups, they tried to come up with protective devices that would safeguard the egg on it quick journey.
It was all part of an effort to learn about force and gravitational force, said their teacher, MaryKay Schaub. The groups used items such as bubble wrap, paper and sturdy boxes to protect their eggs. One group even used an umbrella, hoping it would catch the air just right and serve as a parachute of sorts.
One by one, the student groups dropped their precious cargo from the second-floor window of The Center for Health Science at Annunciation School. Then they all ran outside to face the results.
And the result were extremely positive. Every egg sent flying out the window made it to the ground without as much as a crack, leaving a classroom full of happy — and better educated — students!
