The faculty members at Erie 1 BOCES Harkness Career & Technical Center have selected Angela Doria, a senior from Akron High School, as their featured student of the month for February. Angela is currently enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program under the instruction of Ms. McKay and Mrs. Place.
Angela was selected by the staff and administration from the BOCES career center because she is active in school, helps others in the program and, as a candidate for the National Technical Honor Society, maintains a strong grade point average. After graduation, Angela wants to become a social worker. She hopes to attend Daemen College with a major in social work.
The Early Childhood Education program provides an in-depth study of early childhood care and education. Students participate in and create a variety of activities for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Creative activities in the areas of music, art, science, math and storytelling are investigated and practiced. Students have a variety of hands-on experiences in both the Erie 1 BOCES on-site toddler playgroup and preschool. Students also participate in an internship and create a professional portfolio.
As part of the public education model, Erie 1 BOCES offers more than 25 career and technical programs to high school students in Erie County. High school students interested in learning more about how they can participate in various programs such as the Legal Academy, computer networking and early childhood education during their normal school day should visit http://www.e1b.org/cte or speak with their high school counselor.
