Some people leave Buffalo for Hollywood, but this is a story of someone who left Hollywood for Buffalo! Ron Glatzhofer was born and raised in Hollywood and worked for more than 20 years in the entertainment business, first as a roadie and eventually working his way up to tour manager for musical groups such as Parliament Funkadelic and Aerosmith.
In 1988, when Ron came to Buffalo as a tour manager for Rick James, he met his future wife while staying at the Holiday Inn on Delaware Avenue. She was the director of sales at the hotel, and they now reside in Angola where Ron, after retiring from the road, turned to his other love ... cooking.
Since Ron is a native of the West Coast, southwestern foods, hot sauces and chili-based foods have always been his specialty. After working at several Southtowns restaurants, Ron decided to go into business for himself marketing his most requested item, his signature salsa, under the Saltamontes Salsa label.
Saltamontes, in Spanish, means “grasshopper,” which has been Ron’s nickname since he was a child, given to him by those who could not pronounce Glatzhofer. His first opportunity to sell his salsa was at Ralph Wilson Stadium during the 2003 football season. Ron now sells his signature salsa, as well as pico de gallo, homestyle chips, hot sauce, barbecue sauce and more at the popular Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market every Saturday, May through December.
