Eldon House: History and holidays

If you enjoy history as much as the holidays, then Eldon House in nearby London, Ontario, is the perfect destination for you! London’s oldest residence, Eldon House is beautifully decorated for the holiday season and invites guests to participate in a number of festive events.

Virtually unchanged since the last century, Eldon House features family heirlooms, furnishings and priceless treasures of London’s Harris family, as well as a beautiful 19th century-style garden. Built in 1834 for John and Amelia Harris, this historic home remained in the family until 1960 when it was donated to the City of London. Although surrounded by the city today, the house and its gardens are a place of beauty and tranquility.

Through Jan. 1, guests can enjoy the sights and scents of the Victorian Christmas tradition. Visitors will experience beautiful holiday decorations of the past, and a special Christmas exhibition of family artifacts on display upstairs.

A New Year’s Day Levee will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 1. Celebrate the New Year by touring Eldon House and listening to musical entertainment in the elegant drawing room. Exchange greetings and gather with friends for hot cider and treats in the Interpretive Centre.

Eldon House is located at 481 Ridout St. in London. For additional information, visit www.eldonhouse.ca or call (519) 661-0333. For helpful information on planning a quick getaway to London, please visit www.londontourism.ca.
