My news idea has to do with a local super market, Tops Markets. I was employed for Tops Markets for nearly 9 years. I worked primarily in the sub-burbs as a customer service manager, and my last year employed with the company was at the highest volume store, the store on South Park and Clark in Hamburg, NY. I had been anticipating a promotion to the next level of service management, and after achieving a 99% on the internal audit, decreasing shrink, and improving morale and customer service in the store, felt my odds were pretty good. Unfortunately, to my surpirse I was mistaken. In the fall of 2010 I was sent to an inner-city store which was extremely out of my comfort area. There I had to deal with customer abuse, wrestling associates, and being called things that I had never heard of. After giving the job four months of sincere effort, and going to my district manager three times about being uncomfortable about working there, I was left with no other option but to resign from my position as customer service mgr. In my resignation letter, I stated that I would step down to a part time at a store closer to my house. The district manager wouldn't allow this, which I found odd because other salaried managers in the past had stepped down, and there was never a problem. I dismissed the issue and my last day working for the company was February 19,2011. Right after leaving the stores, I contacted the HR dept and asked their advice about returning part time. They advised that I should wait until there was a district manager change and apply to the district again. My DM was moved in the early fall, and I then contacted the new DM in the disctrict to gain permission to apply to the store. He gave his blessing. Once I applied, the store manager at the store I was offered a job at agreed that it would be excellent to have someone at the store who was knowledgeable about the position and would be able to provide some strong support to night shifts. Now again, this was only going to be a part time position of about 16-20 hours per week. Once the former DM found out (who is in a different district, overseeing different stores) found out, he called the store manager and told me I was unable to continue work, even after already offering me a position at the store. I contacted the local HR office again, and haven't heard anything from them. This is why I am turning to Channel 2 for your help. I think that with a little bit of media involvement, they may change their mind and allow me to come back to work, or at the bare minimum at least provide a reason why I am the exception to the rule of several other associates who left on good terms, and are able to re-hired.
