Buffalo Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Nelson Starr and John & Mary of 10,000 Maniacs fame are scheduled to perform during the National Food Day event from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Horsefeathers Market & Residence, 346 Connecticut St., Buffalo. Nelson Starr & The Benjamins will perform from 5:45 to 7 p.m., followed by The Flying Horsefeathers from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and John & Mary from 9 to 10 p.m.
Buffalo architectural firm The Frizlen Group is set to begin rehabilitating the five-story, 114-year-old “Horsefeathers” building. Plans for the building include a local foodmakers’ market in the basement and on the first-floor, and 18 loft-style apartments on the upper floors. The total cost of the renovation project is $4 million.
The event will feature area farmers, food producers and advocates, food-related films, informational tables, children’s activities, tours of the building, food trucks and local food entrepreneurs, and much more. Nutrition professionals will be on hand to answer questions and help make the connection between local foods, health and wellness. Urban farming pioneers, food producers, rooftop gardening experts and LEED-certified architects will explain the vision behind the future Horsefeathers Community Market while visitors sample culinary delights and wines from local wineries.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown will be on site from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22 to participate in opening ceremonies.
