Local Charity with Global Reach Celebrates First Birthday

Acromegaly Community (www.AcromegalyCommunity.com) is an organization dedicated to helping people battling a rare tumor. On September 30, 2011, Acromegaly Community will celebrate its first birthday as an IRS-recognized Not-For-Profit charity.
Founded in Buffalo, NY, Acromegaly Community, Inc. has already expanded its services to offer direct support to patients throughout the globe.
"It's not good to hear that people are going through some of these things. But nice to know that there are others who know exactly what you’re talking about," reported Mike Peck, an active member of Acromegaly Community. According to Wayne Brown, the founder of Acromegaly Community, "Our goal is to let patients and their loved ones know we are here for them but also to let the medical community know we are here - for education on patient perspective, as well as social and emotional support for their patients.”
In the past year, Acromegaly Community published a book to offer information and support entitled Alone in My Universe: Struggling with an Orphan Disease in an Unsympathetic World, hosted a national convention in Las Vegas, NV, where 12 people were able to attend on full scholarship, and provides members bimonthly conference calls led by leading medical professionals at no cost. Acromegaly Community also offers support message boards, and blogs where all members are encouraged to contribute their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Membership in Acromegaly Community, and most of its services are offered to its members at no cost. Patients, loved ones, and medial professionals are encouraged to join Acromegaly Community, and contribute to the dialogue.
Acromegaly Community's mission is to provide an emotional and communal support network for people touched by Acromegaly. They offer a central location for medical information on issues including surgery, medication, radiation and post diagnosis support. Most importantly, they provide a network of emotional support for Acromegaly patients, their friends and their family.
