Farmers & Artisans, a unique Williamsville store offering consumers a personal connection to local family farms, is reaching out to the local college community. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday through Nov. 16, Farmers & Artisans will take part in the University at Buffalo North Campus Farmers Market in the Capen Hall overhang.
“We are bringing apples, pears and fruit juices from Blackman Farm, other local in-season fruits, all-natural bakery items made with organic New York state flour and other local ingredients, and yogurts and dairy from local dairies,” according to Julie Blackman of Farmers & Artisans. “Meat items will also be available by pre-ordering at the market or at Farmers & Artisans.”
“We are the local connection to the amazing flavor of New York family farms,” Blackman added, “and it’s important to make this connection to the student population. This age group is becoming more aware of what they’re eating and they want to know where their food is coming from. Also, many of the students live on campus and do not have transportation. Faculty and staff have busy schedules, therefore it's important for us to bring this connection to them and offer healthy, minimally processed, sustainable and delicious food options for students, faculty and staff.”
In addition to bringing healthy food alternatives to the college, Farmers & Artisans is also bringing college students into the store through internship programs.
“In our bakery, one of our goals is to promote the craft of traditional artisan baking,” said David Setzer of Farmers & Artisans. “One way we are doing this is by encouraging students from the baking programs at Niagara County Community College and Erie Community College to intern with us.”
The first intern to join Farmers & Artisans, in the spring of 2010, was a student attending NCCC. After completing her internship, she was hired. Another graduate of NCCC was added to the staff in the spring of 2011.
Currently, two interns from NCCC are gaining professional experience at Farmers & Artisans, while another employee is studying Bakery & Pastry Arts at ECC.
