Erie 1 BOCES Harkness Career & Technical Center hosted the 4th Annual Summer Institute for Human Rights and Genocide Studies. The institute provided an in-depth look at the Holocaust, contemporary genocide and human rights issues to give local high school students and teachers a broader understanding and help them make a difference in their communities, nation and world.
Between June 28 and July 8, students gathered daily to listen to guest speakers, view films and participate in discussions and activities related to human rights studies. The Institute’s theme this year was “Women’s Rights are Human Rights,” which was supported by field trips to the Susan B. Anthony house in Rochester and the National Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls. Participants also received a visit from three local Holocaust survivors who shared their story and experiences in an intimate, conversational setting.
Other highlights of the Institute included a visit to the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown and a day of volunteering at a local refugee center.
The 2010 Summer Institute for Human Rights was held at the Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus.
