On May 16th, 21,170 baby Brown Trout were stocked into the water near Clark's Island in Wilson, NY. The fish were trucked here from the Caledonia Fish Hatchery by two Department of Environmental Conservation trucks. The trucks are equipped with special tanks to hold the fish and keep them alive during the trip. Volunteers from the Wilson Conservation Club, American Legion Post 836, Wilson Firemen and residents of Wilson are usually on hand to help stock these fish. DEC biologist Mike Wilkinson is on hand to oversee the stocking and help in the unloading. There is also, usually a Game Warden present. In times past, the fish were netted from the tanks, loaded into buckets and hand carried to the water for stocking. Now flexible tubes with aluminum extensions are used to get the fish closer to the water without touching them or hurting them. Of the 21,170 fish, none were lost in transit or a result of the stocking. These fish will grow and will be around for many years for the enjoyment of all.
